City of Pines "Needy Lovers

Written by Justin Dobbelaar

Let me introduce you to this Pacific Northwest band, City of Pines. Founded by Nick Clack and co-founder Tyler Cutforth. This indie-Folk Rock outfit is true to its roots and embodies the foggy moodiness of the land, rain soaked soft greens of the towering timbers, and the emotions of the great Casade Range.

Just like a needy lover, I couldn't get enough of this song and I kept coming back for more. Right away the song hooks you in with a chugging guitar and lyrics that paint a picture of two young lovers that struggle with the ebb and flow of relationships. I feel like everyone can relate to this one, we all have gone through hardships with life partners or friends and at some point you either choose to work through it or call it quits. We all want to feel something real and that takes work. In this song, that's exactly what you get. A true love story.

The drums kick in and bring a nice lift to the song, setting the groove with a clever rhythm that stays pretty consistent throughout the song. And let me tell you, it's nearly impossible to not sing along to the chorus. If you're having a day and need a positive charge, throw this song on and go for a drive. I really enjoy all the subtle guitar layers and melodies that are sprinkled on top of the driving bass and drums. It's builds tension and releases it right where you want it to, giving a sense of euphoria, especially when you get to the bridge. Bringing it back to the chugging guitar, slowly building into the final sing-along chorus.

"Needy Lovers" is one of my favorites from this band. It was hard to choose which song to review because they have so many great songs that you should go listen to and add to your daily playlists. But ultimately, I chose this one because I kept finding myself huming the melody throughout the day and would have to throw it on the Bluetooth. Hope you enjoy!

City of Pines are in the process of releasing their debut album and have started fundraising, so if you dig the tunes and want to hear more, please consider checking that out!
